The composers:
Gustav Mahler
was an Austro-Bohemian Romantic comjposer, and one of the leading conductors of his generation.   As a composer he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century.
"I am thrice homeless, as a Bohemian in Austria, as an Austrian among Germans, as a Jew throughout the world--everywhere an intruder, never welcomes."
Thus spoke Mahler.  More than many other composers, his works are highly personal expressions of his inner world, a world characterized by an overwhelming alienation and loneliness.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
was a Russian composer of the Romantic period.   He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, bolstered by his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe and the United States.
The life of this composer exhibits as close a ling as you will find anywhere between an artist's inner world and the outward products of that artis's creative activity.   As a man, Tchaikovsky was defined by and indivisible from his music, which became an outlet for all the shifting moods of his turbulent soul.  As Professor Robert Greenberg says,
"If Tchaikovsky felt it, it found a way into his music."
