Tokyo 2020 Welcomes Two Railway Companies as Official Partners
7 June 2016
The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee today welcomed Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Metro) and East Japan Railway Company (JR East) as Tokyo 2020 Official Partners, the second domestic tier of the Tokyo 2020 Sponsorship Programme.
Tokyo Metro and JR East have been jointly attributed the category “Passenger Rail Transportation Services.” The addition of the two companies brings the total number of Tokyo 2020 domestic partners to 36*, including 21 Official Partners.
Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori welcomed the new appointment, “On this occasion, I am delighted to welcome Tokyo Metro and JR East as Tokyo 2020 Official Partners. Japan’s rail companies are known throughout the world for their extremely efficient operations. JR East operates an extensive rail network that covers the entire Kanto region and stretches as far north as the 2011 disaster-affected areas, while Tokyo Metro provides invaluable support to Tokyo’s world-renowned subway system. In partnership with these two companies, I am confident that we will be able to realise safe, punctual and comfortable rail transportation services for all visitors to the Tokyo 2020 Games.”
Yoshimitsu Oku, President of Tokyo Metro commented, “Tokyo Metro is a subway operator that provides vital support to Tokyo’s urban functions in line with the Tokyo Metro group ideal of ‘Keeping Tokyo on the Move.’ The company implements a range of measures based on the concept ‘Peace of mind = Safety + Services’ so that all can ride with peace of mind. Having become a Tokyo 2020 Official Partner, Tokyo Metro is committed to contributing to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games by sharing the charm of Tokyo as a ‘Navigator of Tokyo’ and acting as a ‘Vital link in Tokyo’s transport network’.”
Tetsuro Tomita, President and CEO of JR East commented, “JR East was recently named a Tokyo 2020 Official Partner in the Passenger Rail Transportation Services category. We are honoured to have the opportunity to contribute to the success of this event. Acting in its capacity as a company operating in the East Japan area, JR East will help ensure that the Tokyo 2020 Games proceed without issue while contributing to the growing enthusiasm surrounding this event by providing safe and comfortable transportation services and revitalising local industries. Moreover, through these efforts, we will endeavour to create an important legacy that will continue to benefit communities long after 2020.”
About Tokyo Metro:
Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. operates nine subway lines covering 195.1 km in central Tokyo - seven of which offer through-services with lines operated by other railway companies. Our system forms the heart of an extended railway network of 532.6 km, including lines operated by our through-service partners, and carries 7.07 million passengers each day. As a “Navigator of Tokyo” and a “Vital link in Tokyo’s transport network,” we work hard to carry our passengers safely and reliably to their destinations. We are also actively involved in other businesses designed to serve our customers’ daily needs.
About JR East:
In 2017, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the company in 1987, following the restructuring of the Japanese National Railways. JR East’s railway network, consisting of approximately 1,660 stations and spanning more than 7,400 km, lies at the core of its operations. Based on our key phrase of “Thriving with Communities, Growing Globally,” we aim to contribute to the growth and prosperity of the East Japan area by providing high quality and leading-edge services to customers and communities.

Symbol Mark
The heart-shaped "M" (Heart M) on our symbol mark stands for "Metro," the French word for subway. It reminds us that we serve the heart of Tokyo with thoughtful, heartfelt service. The background of the symbol mark is bright blue, our primary corporate color. This blue was chosen to convey an active, lively image in tune with the Tokyo Metro Group Ideal of "Keeping Tokyo on the Move."
Communication Mark
We have combined the symbol mark and the "Tokyo Metro" name to create our communication mark which is displayed at points of contact with our customers, such as at station entrances, in train carriages, etc.
